The short answer

If you are looking round a room thinking about the things you cannot see, you want a deep clean. If you are looking at the things you can see, a regular clean will do it.

The two get talked about as though one is a longer version of the other. A regular clean keeps a clean home clean; a deep clean makes a home clean again.

What each one actually covers

A maintenance visit works on the surfaces that get used. Floors, worktops and hob, the outside of appliances, sinks and taps, bathrooms cleaned and disinfected, mirrors, dusting, beds, bins. It is fast because everything on that list is reachable and nothing has had time to bond.

What it does not do is reach behind, underneath or inside things. Nobody on a routine visit is pulling out the fridge, taking down extractor filters, descaling a shower screen or washing skirting boards by hand.

That is not corner-cutting. Those jobs do not need doing weekly, and there is no room for them in the hours.

A deep clean works on accumulation instead of use:

Almost none of that is dirt from last week. It is months of sun cream, cooking grease, sand, coastal salt and hard-water minerals, and most of it needs chemistry and dwell time rather than more effort.

Why one costs more, and where the line moves

A maintenance visit to a two-bedroom apartment is a couple of hours for one person, and it lands in the same range every time. The first deep clean of that same flat can take most of a day, and a family villa that has never had one is often a team job.

The work is slower because you dismantle and reassemble as you go, and the scope is genuinely uncertain until someone has looked behind the appliances. So a deep clean costs more per visit and happens rarely; a regular clean costs less and happens often.

A few things move the line. Let properties never get a window for the deep work between back-to-back bookings, which is why owners around the resorts book a deep clean in Vilamoura in spring and hold it with changeovers.

A house that sits closed is not dirty in the usual way, but it holds damp, dust and stale air, so reopening it is deep-clean work regardless. An empty property at handover is judged higher again, which is why end of tenancy cleaning is its own service.

Why waiting costs more

The two are not independent purchases. Almost everything a deep clean removes started as something a regular clean would have wiped away in seconds.

Splashed fat on a kitchen wall is a five-second job on Tuesday, a stubborn film in three weeks, and a baked-on layer needing a degreaser after three months. Limescale on a shower screen goes the same way, except that at the far end it stops being removable: long-standing scale etches the glass, and the only fix is a new screen.

Mould in silicone is treatable on the surface and has to be cut out once it is underneath. Sun cream oil wipes off sealed stone and has to be poulticed out of unsealed stone.

Skipping maintenance to save money means buying more deep cleans, and sometimes new grout or new sealant with them. The pattern that works is a deep clean to set a baseline, routine visits to hold it, and a lighter one occasionally, which is how our home cleaning in Albufeira is usually set up.
